aren’t all kids naturally active?
The global levels of children’s physical activity are very low[3] In Australia just two out of 10 children[4] meet national physical activity guidelines of at least 60 minutes a day,[5] and up to 70% of a child’s day is spent sitting.[6]
- The current generation of children are potentially the most sedentary in the history of humankind.
- The global levels of children's physical activity are very low.[3]
- Children who are more active have better physical and mental health, and also perform better in school.
How active should children be?
Children should aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day involving mainly aerobic activities.
- At least 3 days a week, children should include intense activities that strengthen muscle and bone
- Children should reduce and break up sitting as often as possible
- Primary school children should get 9 to 11 hours sleep per night
